Ladies 1s flummoxed slipping to 4th in the league

Ladies 1s (1) vs Fareham (3)

Scorer: Olingschlaeger

Romsey Ladies 1st XI suffered their second defeat of the season in a top of the league clash against Fareham – a punishing loss which saw them slip from second to fourth place.

Predictably both teams were geared up for a hard game and the first ten minutes saw several tustles, one leaving Romsey forward Amy Edwards needing stitches to a head wound.

Romsey regrouped but Fareham opened the scoring soon after when a break down the right wing, led to a stonking cross to the near post. Tight marking from Romsey failed to stop a neat deflection from a diving Fareham player.

A new Romsey formation ensured the team attacked as a unit and created some great opportunities but Romsey were largely unable to find that final touch and it remained 1-0 to the visitors at half time.

Fareham piled on the pressure in the 2nd half with close, accurate play which forced mistakes from Romsey. Player of the match, Zoe Rogers, made several key saves in the Romsey goal but wasn’t able to stop Fareham for goal number two. Romsey endured a number of short corners, holding firm by speedy closing down from Sophie Riley, and a quick reaction save on the line from Lou Viney.

Romsey pulled one back late in the game, thanks to a fast break down the right from Becky Hutchins and Kate Moss, who set up Kate Olingschlaeger in the D to finish decisively from short range.

Unfortunately Romsey could not find another and the game finished 3-1.

Romsey will welcome the return of captain Liz Forbes, and with her will aim to fight back to the top of the table, starting next week away against Yateley.

Another attack from Romsey saw the initial strike saved, but Kate Moss put Romsey in front by pouncing on the resulting confusion to slot the ball in past the keeper and defender on the line.

The Uni grabbed an equaliser just before half time.

Romsey woke themselves up and regained their attacking momentum. Tracy Nicoll and Emily Slade linking beautifully on the left, and switching the play over to Amy Edwards, who broke through the defence and sent a flicked shot towards the goal. Emily Bradshaw got to the front post first and quick reflexes deflected the ball into the goal from chest height.

Petersfield came out in the second half with the hopes to test the Romsey defence. However, the home side were up to the task and soon picked the ball up and began making attacks of their own. Goal number 4 came after Edwards made a 30yard run to keep the ball in on the back line, gained control and slipped it back to Olingschlaeger, who’d positioned herself perfectly on the P spot ready to sweep it in.

Romsey grabbed a 5th after player of the match, Riley drove towards the D, drawing the defenders in. A well timed square ball to the top of the D released Bradshaw to grab her second after beating the keeper. Captain Liz Forbes was delighted at the result, and even happier that her team are creating chances from all over the pitch. Roll on next week!

Ladies 2 share the points away to Fleet

Fleet & Ewshot (1) vs Romsey 2s (1)

Ladies 1s take decisive victory over Gosport

Romsey Ladies 1s (4) – Gosport Borough (0)

Scorers: Edwards (2), Hutchins, Bradshaw

Romsey ladies 1st XI out-classed and out-played Gosport to take a decisive 4 – 0 victory on Saturday.

The home team’s attacking line-up was hungry to demonstrate their prowess in front of goal securing a 2-0 lead within the opening 10 minutes.

The first goal came from a side line ball taken by Tracy Nicoll, who found a long diagonal cross to Amy Edwards on top of the D. Edwards instinctively powered into the D and struck with conviction into the bottom corner.

Romsey quickly doubled their lead with a beautiful passage of play that originated from inside the Romsey defensive 23. Becky Hutchins was instrumental in linking instinctively with Amy Welch, whose pace proved too much for the Gosport defence. Player of the match, Welch, played a pinpoint accurate pass into the D where Hutchins was waiting to the finish.

Captain Liz Forbes was delighted with another impressive performance which keeps Romsey top of the league.

Ladies keep their eye in with hat full of goals

Ladies 1s (5) vs Southampton 3/4s (1)

Scorers: Bradshaw, Riley(2), Moss(2)

Romsey Ladies enjoyed another goal fest this week when they took on Southampton in a half term friendly match.

A slow opening quarter gave Southampton a false sense of security, as Romsey held back against a youthful and slightly inexperienced side. Romsey were given a wake-up call early on, as a defensive mix up gifted Southampton a goal to take the lead.

Romsey stepped up a gear, started to pass smoothly and began building up pressure in the final third. The pressure soon paid off as Emily Bradshaw upped the ante, characteristically carrying the ball past a bewildered defence before slipping it past a stranded GK.

Romsey ‘took the gloves off’ in the second half with an early goal thanks to an inch perfect through ball from midfielder Liz Forbes which was swept in by Sophie Riley. Romsey, now in their stride, played the ball comfortably round the back feeding it to sweeper Lou Viney to fire the ball out of defence setting up Romsey’s forwards time and again.

It wasn’t long before Riley grabbed her 2nd of the match, and cemented the Romsey lead. Kate Moss took goal number four after clever interplay around the D with Riley. Moss grabbed the final goal, a tap in after the Romsey midfield has terrorised the Southampton defence.

Despite Romsey’s composure, Southampton’s speed still proved tricky at times, forcing a couple of great saves from Romsey keeper Selina Cox and a save on the line by Bethan Knights in the dying minutes.

Half term stalemate for Ladies 2s

Ladies 2s (0) vs Havant 4s (0)

Scorers: -

Romsey ladies 2s took on Havant 4s in a half-term friendly in windy Portsmouth.

The first half saw Romsey attacking hard and putting the home side under tremendous pressure. Romsey bombarded the right hand side with many attacks with Caitlin Hogan Lloyd and Sally Shrubb linking well to release Amy Welch and Helen Ford up the wing.

Romsey maintained possession in and around the Havant D with accurate and intelligent passing. Welch sliced through the defence on a number of occasions with her pace upsetting the Havant defence. Despite the pressure, there were few clear cut chances falling to Romsey. The best opportunity went to Rosie Bishop who’s well timed run put her in a fantastic position, but was denied by the agile Havant keeper.

The second half saw a new lease of life from Havant, as they threw caution the wind pushing more players forward. This tactic caused Romsey some problems, and many times the Romsey defence found themselves having to cover an extra player.

Romsey dealt with the pressure admirably, with credit to the hardworking midfield for tracking back, and the defence for making several important blocks and interceptions. Player of the match Hogan-Llyod flourished in the second half, getting back into defence to deal with the threat of swift Havant attacks, whilst also managing to drive forward to support the attacks.

The final result, a 0-0 draw. The game was fascinating to watch, and what it lacked in goals, it certainly made up for in smooth passing play in the attacking third.
