Mens 1st XI Cruise Into Trophy Final
Romsey Men’s 1st XI cruised past Wimborne Wayfarers, a team 2 divisions above them in the Hampshire League to reach the Hampshire Trophy Final.
The team pulled out a strong performance at Romsey Community School coming back from conceding a soft early goal to run out 5-2 winners against what should have been sterner opposition.
Romsey dominated the tie from the off and when they leaked the soft opening goal it was a shock to the team and vociferous home support. The team regrouped however and were quickly back on terms when a neat short corner routine saw Jack Forest-Charde exchange a one-two with Danny Miles, completely wrong footing the opposition defence, and slotting his first goal of the game. Romsey pressure continued and when the outstanding Tom McCarthy picked up the ball on the edge of the Wimborne D there was little doubt that he would go on to double Romsey’s lead.
After the break Wimborne Wayfarers were a changed team and quickly won a string of short corners. The last one saw Dave Edwards wear a short corner strike on the body, preventing a certain goal and so the umpire correctly awarded Wimborne a penalty flick. Romsey keeper Adam Williams made up for his earlier mistake though and spectacularly saved the opposition effort.
Wimbornes hopes of a revival were further dented when Romsey recovered to win another short corner, although the initial flick was saved McCarthy pounced on the rebound to complete his brace.
Although Wimborne managed a short corner goal soon after this was against the run of play and Romsey’s win was almost secured after Tom Ponsford’s driving run and slip pass were confidently finished by veteran shooter Carl Hendy. The scoring was completed by Jack Forest-Chard with a trademark drag flick from another Romsey short corner.
Final score 5-2.
The final will be against Gosport on 2nd May 2010, a 9.30am push back at Chapel Gate, Bournemouth – the first match of this years Hampshire Day. Click here for full here
